Saturday, July 30, 2005 The Island>hee yup i watched the show today.. real cool! muz go catch it if u hv the chance.. lots of action/violence and meaning behind the whole plot.. makes u tink abt the issue on clones again... and the moral of the story would be 'No one can play God'. well maybe cept in sim games like tropico and sims? hehee... aniway went blading today.. sup to couple wif kayak too.. haven kayak b4 btw but too bad blade halfway was rainin really heavily... so prob goin kayak next sat ba...
oh ya muz mention tis place in ps where me and dejia went to after dinner.. b4 the movie we passed by a furniture shop which i tot was quite cool cos it was kinda victorian and european style... but we saw smth strange in front of the shop which placed a chalkboard and on it was written 'set meal'.. huh? hw come the furniture shop is sellin food??!! we din bother much until after dinner we passed by the shop again.. then looked closely and saw pple sitting down at the victorian style table really havin food! hahahahah.. aniway i was looking to hv some dessert so we tot might as well go in and hv some floats which we saw on their menu outside the shop... we chose 2 cosy armchairs rite at the corner of the shop and ordered some ice cream to share instead... there were 2 pieces each of raspberry, mango sorbet, tiramisu and nutella ice cream in choco cups placed on a small tray hahah cute rite?? it was ok la nt anything fantastic.. but we tot we shd come back next time to try the main courses and set meals... nice and cosy 'shop and dine' concept place altho i tink there r nt many choices in terms of food.. but they sell really interesting but of cos ex stuff la... those stuff look as tho u could knock over them anytime haha...

Thursday, July 28, 2005 Andrew S>hee ya forgot to post yest tat i saw him outside outram mrt yest when i was on my way home to the station... if u all din noe he is a local tv actor... aniway he was standing face to face wif a guy fren and tokin.. at first din tink it was anythin till i saw something strange... his fren held up some food in his bare hands to andrew's mouth... when i reached the station entrance i din see whether andrew ate it anot.. but dun u feel its kinda strange tat guys feed each other unless they r.... ermm betta nt say anythin else i get sued.. nt as rich as n*f hehehehe.... i dun even tink brothers do the same thing.. at least nt bet my bros... and andrew and his fren dun look alike aniway... his fren is quite cute by the way.. nt the wow kind of handsome but cute :)

Wednesday, July 27, 2005 Are u a superstar?>yeah the best superstar show i hv seen so far.. not so much cringing at lousy voices hehehe... besides watching out for derrick my utmost fav male singer in the competition is junyang!! hehee yeah.. initially tot he wdnt hv much supporters but amazed to c he got sooo many fen-si hee.. i lurrvv his vocals.. and he sang 2 of my fav singers' songs hehe... altho he may lose out abit at fast songs i tink luckily he chose the correct song.. cos he noes his voice suits JJ's songs.. erm or shd i say JJ's songs suit his voice? hehe... well i guess all of them really really hv to brush up their fast songs cept for derrick cos i felt he also chose the correct fast song... aniway recommending JJ's song fr his latest album which i tink has nt been widely promoted yet...

Sunday, July 24, 2005 天上的彩虹 總出現在天晴雨過>yup tats wat it is.. everything's fine nw bet us 4 gals and our little guy fren.. juz need to clear up misunderstandings and make him understand some issues since most of us have entered the next stage of life liao.. we had a nice tok and it was ages since we had one.. and then i left early to do my shoppin! hee.. ya was plannin to get a new G2000 suit for my conference in china... will be there for a wk or so so prob betta to get smth new.. and the main reason was its on sale ma hehe... so in the end got a beige jacket wif matching pants and skirt.. i bet u muz be wondering hw much i spent in all.. tats nt all.. went to get a pair of jeans and 2 3/4 jeans also.. haha well i dun really buy jeans outside of this fashion but it seems like those 3 pairs i found at bugis were really suitable and comfortable for me... yeah a new brand to buy my essentials fr.. so in all guess hw much i spent?? well in all ard 200 bucks.. hee.. and i dun tink i did enuff shoppin leh.. aniway theres always next time hee...

everyone wans it but when u feel u r losing grip u start to wonder whether u shd hold on to it...
aniway din hv a veri nice sun due to a fren wantin to break off all friendships wif me and my jc gd frens.. u may be wondering wat has happened so bad that makes him hv to resort to this? well starting all the way fr the beginnin.. me and 2 gals were classmates in jc.. and then we knew a gal fr another class whom we started building our friendships wif... so tat makes the 4 of us who usually hangs out tog... and then one day came along tis guy who was also fr another class who sort of likes to hang out wif us... weird rite.. a guy who wans to hang out wif a gp of 4 gals.. we all tot it was initially.. tot he liked one of us or wad.. hehehe.. but it turns out he likes a gal in his class so couldnt be.. aniway since then he juz hangs out wif us... goes out on outings wif us even tho he's the oni guy ard... altho we met alot less when we advanced on to uni.. we all still met once in awhile to keep in touch...
so here's the story... ever since 3 of us gals started wkrg (the last gal is doin her masters) we hv been bz wif our own lives.. we do hv gatherings and we do ask him along.. but as for sports or minor meetings to pass stuff here and there we din tink its necessary to ask every single person along... cos its oni bet those involved or see wat the activity is... well so he's been tellin one of my frens tat he feels left out cos we dun ask him out for most of those sports/mini meetings... well its nt cos we dun wan to but those meetings r either 2-3 pple or sports sessions tat we gals pref to do by ourselves... haiz can anyone tell him the meaning of privacy or gals' talk?
when me and my frens came back fr korea we got soft toys for him as well as for a gal who din go wif us due to work commitments... well guess wad? he complained abt the gift... gosh i am like tinking pple treat u as a fren then buy gift 4 u wat hv u got to complain abt?! u shd be happy tat someone even bothers getting u a gift out of sooo many frens! well he tinks its too childish altho we feel its the perfect gift for him cos it reminds us of him! cute mah... haiz... i pity the toy.. his owner dun appreciate him.. yeah u may be tinkin ok next time juz get sweets or food for him but then wat if he comes round and say: hey where's my gift? so bo sim!

so aniway in his email to us he says he oni wans ONE proper reply on some 'evidence' to show tat we do treat him as a fren in oni ONE meeting and he will nt listen to anymore explanation after tat... and all of tis within ONE wk or he will discontinue the friendship... ok fine i still tink tis is reasonable... one meeting in one wk is betta than none.. so we tried to call him out on sun to discuss stuff but he juz simply dun wan to return our calls and sms... ok fine we wait till next wk then.. one of my fren tries to tok to him on msn on sun nite but he ignores her.. so i try addin him and tokin to him instead... great he replies.. by saying "sat 12pm if one dun come the rest dun need to come" !!! ok fine i go ask ard if everyone can make it.. one gal cant cos her fren ROM so i asked for sun instead.. he goes offline w/o replyin... ok great nw we wait again...
mon at work he went online and of cos i took the chance to ask him abt sun.. and he goes again: "sat 12pm if one dun come the rest dun need to come" *suppress* i am like did u see my reply mr? pple hv their own lives to lead and other frens as well... y cant u make an exception?! so he says sun is the day he wd break off the friendship so sat is the deadline...

ok i said we wdnt even bother if we din treat him as a fren...i noe we hv missed his bdays and gifts more than we do bet the rest of us... but did we ever treat him coldly? or badly? no i dun tink so... i dun even mind pple forgettin my bday.. so long as i tell myself i must nt forget theirs (i do forget sometimes but tats another issue).. i mean wats the big deal of receiving a present less or one tat is nt wat u like? he said its the sincerity tat counts but i feel tat no matter wat the gift is its aredi a blessing which shows pple appreciate u ard... if nt y wd they even bother goin out of trouble juz to get u one or send u a msg to say happi bday? they could hv saved the time, effort and $ on smth better... the bottomline is tat it comes fr the heart.. if pple dun wan to buy gift or say happi bday tats fine.. it juz shows u the difference bet those who really wanna take an effort anot...

This is the text of the Commencement address by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, delivered on June 12, 2005, at Stanford.
"I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.
The first story is about connecting the dots.
I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?
It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?" They said: "Of course." My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.
And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.
It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:
Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating.
None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.
Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.
My second story is about love and loss.
I was lucky - I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation - the Macintosh - a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.
I really didn't know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me - I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.
I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.
During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I retuned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple's current renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.
I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle.
My third story is about death.
When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.
Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything - all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.
About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn't even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor's code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you'd have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.
I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I'm fine now.
This was the closest I've been to facing death, and I hope its the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:
No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog , which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960's, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and Polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.
Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish." It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.

Sunday, July 10, 2005 Juz woke up from my 2nd round of slp..>hey yo everyone! hehehe looong time nvr hear fr me ever since my last post on my korea trip rite??? been really bz at work.. shows tat if i am away for a few days w/o checking my emails my inbox would be bombarded and work piles up for me to follow up on... and new ones keep comin in everyday so it's nvrending.. haiz wat to do.. shows tat i am indispensable to the co??? hahahahahh.. and it was pretty tensed up at work esp the wk rite after i was back.. aniway its kinda over nw as long as i be careful...
well as mentioned in the title i juz woke up fr 2 rounds of slp.. first time since i came back fr korea tat i could hv one full day of rest for myself... younger bro juz went back to brunei.. well he was back in sg for a wk's break.. if u din noe he was posted there as a clerk/guard for 1yr of his NS cos they were shorthanded over there... nt comin back till jan... aniway so no one over here at home.. kinda hungry cos haven taken my breakfast AND lunch hehe.. everyone's at the airport... too lazy to go down to buy cos it was raining aniway... hehee....
hmm yest was another one whole bz day.. went swimmin wif dejia they all at tpy pool... all 4 of us who went to korea was there as well as another jc fren of mine came wif her bf... she couldnt join us on the trip as she was and is really really bz wif her work... but she told us she finally needed a break so intendin to go to tibet/xinjiang this sept.. asked us if we were interested but since all 4 of us juz came back fr korea we were still broke!!! hahahhhaa... wd hv lurved to go c the deserts and tribes and even the dalai lama but guess it wd be real ex.... then had to rush back after swimmin to change to go shoppin and catch war of the worlds in the evening.. it was a pretty gd show altho lotsa pple forewarned me tat the ending was really stupid.. which i absolutely agreed! hahaha.. if humans had some stategy to fight the aliens and nt cos they broke down on their own it wd hv been a perfect show... nt tat it wun get any oscars next yr rite?? cmon its stevie's show manz hehehe....
the prev wkend was really bz as well meeting frens ranging fr sec all the way to uni... met dejia they all for lunch on sat.... haha after lunch we went to times bkshop to look ard and we were reading mags b4 we left.. i was readin cosmopolitan and i saw one part which i showed dejia cos she lurrrvs chocolate... it says choco makes ur sexual drive even higher hahahahah... she was sooo embarrassed hee... yup then we all left for each of our activities where mine was shopping! hee b4 i went home tat day i bought a swensen's ice cream cake for my younger bro when he was back last sat... i got 20% discount voucher la.. u tink i always buy meh??? hehehe....
then on sun met my sec frens at menotti, the italian restaurant in raffles city facing chimes .. heard its a nice place for desserts which we mainly had but they seem to hv nice and reasonably priced proper food... maybe can suggest tat next time to other frens who wanna hv a nice dinner somewhere... passed my korean souvenirs to them which they seemed veri happy to get... one of them even finished up all her korean sweets i gave them durin her drive to meet another gp of frens after meeting us hhahaa.... aniway alexis, the guy who got married at the time i was in korea, told us abt his weddin dinner and stuff.. elaine said he had to keep drinking, even his wife was nt spared! he said he was still quite sober but finally KO when his fren sent him back to the hotel room hahaha... he also told us tat cos there were 2 wedding dinners at tat time a japanese guy came up to his venue and asked whether it was the correct venue he shd be at.. and alexis told him its the other venue which he told us he shd hv gotten an angbao fr him first b4 tellin him the truth hhahahahahaha.... aniway they are in Gold Coast for their honeymoon... awwwww so sweet hor?? hehee... we also asked him when he will be havin babies and he said hv to wait for his wife to pass her drivin test first... so shd be pretty fast la hor?? hehe...
was sup to meet last of all my uni frens for the (prev) wkend but it was cancelled cos the organizer of the gathering had been called back for work last min... was hopin to hear more fr alice abt the nite i was drunk but i guess we can always leave it to next time then :P
hee nice to see all the msgs on the tagboard keep them comin in yo? thx for all ur support for my blog! abt my korea photos everyone's been askin me when they r ready for viewing... well as i said to many of u i am still uploading and rearranging nicely so it takes time... my fav quote again: gd things r worth waiting for rite??? hahahaa.... btw i am uploading them on kodak gallery so u need an ac b4 u can access the fotos so stay tuned for the link ya?
